Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Digital Education is perhaps the contemporary aggregator for terms that have been used since the late 80’s.  Other terms include Computer Mediated Learning, E-Learning and Online Learning.  Prior to the development of the personal computer and the World Wide Web,  the field of study was universally described as “Distance Education”.  There are dozens of academic journals and thousands of authors of note in this field of endeavour. There are also many, and increasing  potential areas of focus. Digital education is now a very clear sub-industry of its own.

The key focus for this course is the experience of the learner, and our capacity to engage with that experience.

During this course, we  reflect on educational professional practice, and its impact on situational learning experience.

We will seek to understand the:

  • value proposition for Digital Education
  • change or conversion factors from analogue to digital approaches to education.
  • scope of  learners and their needs, and the variety of  learning contexts
  • analysis and evaluation of appropriate learning theories for different forms of digital education
  • emerging changes in assessment practice

Has the situation of the learner changed in the Internet era?

Are learning needs fundamentally different and what are the social, cultural and economic drivers?

How is learning best recognised now, and what is useful about assessment modes and methods?
